The Sigma Chi International Fraternity has suspended the Lambda Alpha chapter at Knox College effective immediately. Vice President of Student Development Marquita Barker notified students of the decision in an email sent to the student distribution list on Thursday, October 31st.
The decision to suspend the chapter, “follows work over the past few years between the headquarters staff, chapter advisor, and student leaders to improve operations within the chapter,” Barker wrote.
Founded in 2004, Sigma Chi was the newest fraternity chapter on Knox’s campus. While it is their goal to return to campus in the future, “no timetable has been established at this time,” according to Barker’s email.
In the summer and fall of 2020, the Lambda Alpha chapter was nearly disbanded following a series of sexual assault accusations against chapter members. An anonymous Instagram account was created where the accusations were posted.
Following this, a committee of Knox students, staff, Sigma Chi alumni, and collegiate members was formed to determine the chapter’s future. Two votes for disbandment were held, both of which failed. The chapter was suspended for an unknown period of time following a series of discussions.
The international organization’s decision comes after the Lambda Alpha chapter was actively recruiting during the 2023-2024 school year.
