It’s well into the Knox track season, and the team is finally experiencing their first home meet. Not only will it be the first one of the season, but it is also the first home meet since before anyone currently on the team came to Knox, and the track & field coaches were hired.
It will be a small meet with only a few local schools, including conference schools such as Illinois College and Monmouth, as well as some nearby out-of-conference schools like Augustana.
“Even though there are only three schools coming, these are some of the most competitive schools in the conference.” said junior thrower Steven Dzolic. “Many long-time veterans of the team are very excited about competing in front of a home crowd. This is going to be a really fun meet.”
For Coach Mark Nelson, the head track coach, having a home meet was a point of pride.
“Home meets are something I’ve always done as a head coach. It felt weird last year not hosting a meet. This is something that will help us, I think, as a program take pride in what we do, and I’m excited to be doing it,“ said Nelson.
However, holding the home meet has meant more work for the coaches and athletes, from finding starters and timing, to setting up a pole vault mat. Coach Nelson says he is committed to seeing it through, and wants to make home meets a yearly event.
The track meet starts at 10 A.M. tomorrow and goes until evening.
Knox College will hold its first home track meet in years this weekend. Not only will it be the first one of the season, but it is also the first home meet since before anyone currently on the team came to Knox, and the track & field coaches were hired.
