Only about a quarter of current students participated in the Senate executive board elections for the 2022-23 academic year.
According to the registrar, 1,067 students are currently enrolled at Knox for winter term. In the email announcing the results, the total number of votes was 264. The new senate executive board consists of Harry Phillips ‘23 as Treasurer, Evelyne Dresner ‘24 as secretary, Avi Rajbhandari ‘24 as Vice President and senior Eeman Mahar as President.
The election ran for a total of 5 days from February 11 to 16 with encouragement from the senate for all students to participate in student democracy. Among the four open positions, the President seat and the Treasurer seat had other students running against the new executive board members.
Mahar received a total of 123 votes for the Senate President position. Junior Jamal Davis received 55 and sophomore Caleb Baird received 34.
“Senate once again appreciates everyone for their participation in this election and all the candidates for their hard work,” senior and senate President Mujtaba Hassan said.
Hassan is excited for the new additions to the Senate executive board and wants to encourage more students to participate in student government.
“I can confidently say that the Student Senate is going to be in the best possible hands to continue fully representing and providing a platform for the needs and wants of the diverse and eclectic population of students who call Knox home,” said Hassan.
Voting for the next senate election began Monday February 21, 2022 at 10 AM and will end on Thursday, February 24, 2022 at 10 PM.
