Knox students transformed American history from words on a page into a living experience through a trip to the Peoria Riverfront Museum.
On April 11, 2026, the Department of Political Science and International Relations led the trip to Peoria, encouraging both non-Political Science and International Relations majors to participate.
The trip was offered at no cost, the museum provided free admission, and the Political Science and International Relations department also covered lunch at Bay Leaf Indian Restaurant and Bar.
Approximately 15 students participated in the visit, which included a private tour of the “America 250: The Promise of Liberty” exhibit.
The exhibit offers visitors the opportunity to explore American history through significant documents and artifacts. Beginning in 1776, when the country was founded, artifacts were organized into 13 sections, each representing a key historical period. The exhibit features important documents such as the 1776 edition of the Declaration of Independence, the first printing of the United States Constitution, and a copy of Martin Luther King Jr.’s “I Have a Dream” speech.
Associate Professor of Political Science Katie Stewart emphasized the value of the experience, especially for students interested in American politics.
“Usually we need to go to big cities to see those types of documents, so I think this is a very interesting opportunity for students,” Stewart said.

“As an international student, this is the first time I have learned American history in a structured way,” said freshman Anh Do.
After the private tour, students were free to explore the museum’s other exhibitions, including The Amethyst: Gallery of Minerals, Deep River: The Long Road–The Journey of America, and Joyful Resistance.
The Political Science Department aims to continue organizing different trips at least once or twice every year. In May, the department plans to host a picnic day for students interested in politics to attend. The event is currently being planned and is designed to help students relax in the final week of the term.
